At Men’s Vitality Center in Tucson, we see our share of sports injuries. With sports physicians on staff, we are here to help you if you experience an injury while playing a sport. Here are the most common sports injuries we see:
Ankle sprain
Ankle sprains are incredibly common injuries due to the delicate nature of the ankle. An ankle sprain occurs when the foot is turned in such a way that either stretches or tears the outside ligaments of the ankle. Physical therapy is especially important with an ankle sprain in order to prevent loss of strength and flexibility. Particularly if the sprain is higher on the ankle, which takes longer to heal, it is important to see a sports physician when you sprain your ankle.
Groin pull
Groin pulls occurs when the inner thigh muscles are strained from a side-to-side motion. Groin injuries often happen during football, soccer, baseball, and hockey. Most groin injuries can be treated with rest, ice, and compression. It is important not to return to activity too quickly after a groin pull so it does not become an enduring problem. If you experience a lot of swelling, it is important to be seen by a physician.
Patellofemoral syndrome
Patellofemoral syndrome is the result of repetitive movement of your kneecap against your femur, causing damage to the kneecap’s tissue. It commonly occurs from running, basketball, or volleyball, and can affect one or both knees. The most important thing for patellofemoral pain is to be patient and let it heal. Continue low-impact exercise with periods of rest. See a physician for more specific instructions.
Hamstring strain
The hamstring is composed of three muscles on the back of the thigh. It is possible to overstretch the hamstring, causing a strain. These injuries are commonly caused by movements that require you to kick your legs sharply. Unfortunately, hamstring injuries heal very slowly because they are such an integral part of walking. It is common for athletes to re-injure their hamstrings because it is difficult to rest for as long as is needed.
Shin splints
Shin splints are pain on the front of the legs that are commonly brought on by running. They often occur when you change your running routine to include rougher terrain. It is best to rest and ice shin splints when they occur. Pain medication may also help. If the pain persists, it is time to see a sports physician to ensure that it is not a shin fracture.
ACL tear
The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, is what connects the leg bone to the knee. Sudden stops or being hit from the side can either tear or strain the ACL. If you suspect an ACL tear, you should see a doctor immediately. These are the most severe sports injuries, and they often require surgery.
Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow, or epicondylitis, is caused by repetitive elbow use. This injury is most common for people over 30. The best treatment for tennis elbow is rest, so stay off the tennis court or the golf course until it improves.
