With Jan. 1 just around the corner, you’re probably planning to change a few aspects of your mildly alternative lifestyle. Studies show that nearly three-fourths of all New Year’s resolutions fail by February, and there are a few common reasons why this is the case.
In today’s post, we’ll explain four easy ways that you can help yourself stick to your resolutions this January, and throughout the year. When you’ve finished reading this post, get in touch with a member of Men’s Vitality Center to learn more about how we can help you become a healthier version of yourself next year! Keep Your Resolutions By…
Being Realistic
Many resolutions fail simply because they’re not realistic. Like any other goal you set for yourself, your New Year’s resolutions should strike a balance between optimistic ambition and a realistic evaluation of your current circumstances. If it’s been a few years since you’ve been to the gym, for instance, then six-pack abs probably aren’t a healthy goal to set. Try to set goals that challenge you to push yourself, but don’t set your sights so high that you feel like you can’t ever succeed.
Setting Short- and Long-Term Goals
Building on the previous point, one of the best ways to set yourself up for success is to divide your goals according to the time period in which you hope to achieve them. If can’t currently run a mile but are hoping to run a 5K later next year, then set a short-term goal to increase your endurance and ability to run long distances. By starting out with smaller, more manageable goals, your long-term goals will be in your sights in no time at all!
Tracking Your Progress
There’s nothing quite like having hard data to inform you about how your efforts are paying off. We often don’t notice the small, day-to-day changes in our appearance and abilities, and logging your progress is a great way to make sure that you’re on the right track. Whether it’s taking a full-body picture every other week to see how your weight loss efforts are paying off, or checking on your bank account to see how much money you’re saving, it’s always better to have an unbiased benchmark with which you can evaluate your progress.
Being Kind to Yourself
At the end of the day, you’re setting your resolutions to become a better version of yourself. Your goal is to make personal progress, and you should always remember that progress and perfection are distinct. It’s perfectly fine if you have a cheat day or miss a workout — in the long run, small hiccups won’t matter as long as you stick to your goals.
